EastEnders fans 'work out' Cindy Beale's link to the Knights after jewellery box clue

EastEnders viewers believe a series of "clues" during Thursday night's episode have revealed a shocking link between the new family, the Knights, and a past character.

Cindy Beale is making her big return to the BBC soap at some point this year, more than 20 years since being killed off.

In news yet to be confirmed by the soap, actress Michelle Collins is set to reprise her role, as Cindy comes back from the dead - while no details have been revealed on the storyline.

Viewers saw the Knight family make their debut on Thursday night, as George Knight and his daughters Anna and Gina moved into The Queen Vic.

Linda Carter was horrified to learn her mother and new business partner Elaine Peacock had invited her new man and his family to move in, and help them run the pub.

As Anna and Gina settled into their new home, they caught the eye of resident Bobby Beale.

But it was something Anna said in one scene and an object she had in another that sparked speculation Anna and Bobby could be linked.

As viewers recalled other things about the past as well as a mystery surrounding George, viewers began to suspect there were clues that suggested the family was linked to past character Cindy Beale.

Amid Cindy's random return to the show later this year, fans questioned whether she could be the girls' mother who is thought to be dead, or missing.

It hasn't been made clear what exactly happened to her, other than the fact George's wife is no longer around and apparently walked out on the family years earlier.

In one scene, Anna and Gina were shown rowing over a memory box or jewellery box that belonged to their mum, with them not meant to have it.

Anna said she needed something to remember her mother by - and fans questioned if this scene was important.

Going on the theory that Cindy could be their mother, viewers made the point that Cindy's daughter Lucy Beale was killed with a jewellery box in 2014.

Not only that but she was accidentally killed by her brother Bobby, the same Bobby who had scenes with the girls in this episode.

Viewers also picked up on the girls having scenes with Kathy Beale too, Lucy's grandmother, and the fact that if their mother vanished around nine years ago out of the blue, this was the same year Cindy's daughter was killed - so could the tragic news have caused her to flee?

Another possible hint was when Anna made a comment about Walford being familiar and "like they belong there", which left many fans believing it was a huge clue to their mother being a past character.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: "So what are we all thinking? Cindy beale could possibly be gina and anna’s mother? The (what i assume was) anna’s jewellery box and anna saying walford already felt like home….."

Others recalled that Cindy had a sister called Gina on the BBC soap, as one pointed out the possible jewellery box link.

Another viewer said: "That scene with Anna & Gina talking about their mum and the jewellery box definitely meant something."

A third fan commented: "George's partner Elaine tells her daughter, Linda Carter that the mother of his girls walked out on them 9 years earlier and 'never looked back.' Now, what else of note happened back in 2014? Cindy's eldest daughter, Lucy Beale was killed in a shocking 'whodunnit' storyline."

Another fan wrote: "Definitely not a coincidence that Anna and Gina had scenes with Bobby and Kathy tonight!"

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
