EastEnders' Emma reveals devastating truth about character's death and dark past

EastEnders viewers learned the truth about Emma Harding's past and the death of her mother on Tuesday night, after the character made it clear she was hiding something.

Fans saw the character rush off on Monday night, after being asked about her late mother.

Initially she talked of her mother being glamorous, before sharing the sad news she had passed away.

Emma told Lola that her mother had died in a care home during lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic, and that she wasn't able to visit her.

But when quizzed about what she was like, Emma made an excuse and left - only to be confronted on Tuesday night by Lola's husband Jay Brown.

Jay told Emma that Lola didn't have enough time left to be messed around by her mother, amid Lola's terminal brain tumour diagnosis a few months ago.

Emma realised she needed to step up and begged Lola to let her be a part of her life, as she finally revealed what she was hiding about her past.

It's then that Emma explained she fled home at the age of 16 after a difficult upbringing with her mum, who was an alcoholic.

Emma said she was often insulted by her mum and that her mother would make jibes about her weight and her appearance.

Her mother also blamed her for her not achieving her dream career on stage, and it's clear they did not have a great relationship.

Emma became estranged from her mother until she was contacted later on by a care home, where her mum was living.

She refused to visit her despite requests, and not long after her mother passed away - leaving Emma feeling guilty.

It comes after fans questioned if she was hiding something dark, after her odd behaviour during Monday's episode.

Taking to Twitter, viewers guessed she might not even be Lola's mother in a sick twist, or perhaps she killed her own mum.

One viewer said: "Emma not wanting to talk about her mum when Lexi mentions it. Yeah she's definitely lying. I wonder if she killed her mum?"

Another tweeted: "I get the feeling her mum hasn’t died! I don’t trust Emma at all!"

A third fan added: "I think that Emma might be telling porkies about her 'mother'," as a fourth tweeted: "She's not Lola's mum is she?"

Meanwhile, a fifth viewer said: "Her mum died during lockdown? I thought she said both of her parents were dead? Did I mishear that?"

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
