East Lothian lifeboat called over concerns paddle boarders were being swept out to sea

East Lothian lifeboat crews were sparked into action amid reports of two paddle boarders being swept out to sea on Sunday afternoon.

Volunteers from Dunbar RNLI Lifeboat were contacted around 3.45pm after members of the public expressed concern about the individuals who were seemingly in trouble off the coast at Peffer Sands.

Inshore (ILB) and all-weather (ALB) lifeboats launched from Belhaven Bay around 4pm and the paddle boarders were located a short time later, around a mile from the coast.

When spoken to by lifeboat crews they explained they were experienced instructors who were heading to North Berwick from Dunbar. They were equipped with radios.

Dunbar lifeboats say this was a well intentioned false alarm, and their teams stood down around 4.30pm.

As outlined on the RNLI Dunbar Lifeboats website ILB helm Alan Blair said: “After speaking to the paddle boarders we were satisfied they were not in any harm and needed no assistance.

"We are grateful for the help of the public who did the right thing by calling the coastguard with their concerns. It was a false alarm with good intent.”

People are urged to contact 999 and ask for the coastguard if they ever see anything of concern in the water.
