East Lothian beach clean-up after piles of rubbish from boat wash up on shore

An East Lothian woman took it upon herself to clean up a local beach after piles of rubbish – seemingly from a boat – washed up on the shore.

Trash can be seen strewn all over the sand at Canty Bay, near North Berwick, with Caitlin Barrow launching a one-person clean-up mission after coming across the sad sight.

A short video taken at the scene shows plastic and other garbage left lying on the ground. A label for boat bilge cleaner and a tag for Castol diesel oil was among the waste left lying. The date on the diesel label suggests it was discarded recently.

Caitlin was keen to stress to Edinburgh Live that the beach is normally clean and tidy for locals and visitors to enjoy, but admits she was left disappointed to see the rubbish left lying.

In a social media post she commented: "Sad times. Strewn all over the beach. Looks to be from a boat. Did me best to collect it all but pretty sure there is plenty going into the food chain and damaging ecosystem. #eastcoast #scotland #litter #rubbish #cleanup #humanimpact"

Caitlin also shared images showing a black bag full of rubbish after her beach clean up was complete.
