East Kilbride residents invited to view revised proposals for McDonald's drive-thru set to create 120 jobs

Fast food giant McDonald’s is to present revised proposals for a new £4million drive-thru restaurant in East Kilbride to the local community next week.

The updated plans for the proposed Lindsayfield restaurant, which is set to bring 120 local jobs, will be revealed at a drop-in event between 3pm and 7pm on March 29 at St Vincent's Church in Greenhills.

Following the withdrawal of the previous application last year, McDonald’s is seeking to address the various points raised by South Lanarkshire Council and are now in a position to present these plans to the local community.

There were a number of submissions from local residents to the council with fears of an increase in littering in the area and traffic issues such as congestion.

More than 100 representations were lodged on Hogmanay alone, with residents in Lindsayfield having long complained about the lack of infrastructure and severe congestion on the road in and out of the area.

The brownfield site is part of the existing Morrisons car park, which was considered underused and surplus to their requirements.

The proposed development comprises a modern freestanding single storey McDonald’s restaurant with drive-thru facility, car parking, landscaping and associated works, including customer order displays.

The entire development space is 371 sqm and will include 97 covers for diners to eat their meals within a relaxed modern environment. It will also include 35 car parking spaces (including three accessible) and 14 cycle spaces.

Members of the public are being encouraged to drop in and view the plans and ask questions to members of the project team and provide feedback on the proposals.

In addition to the drop-in event, a consultation website will be available from March 29, where the public can view exhibition materials and provide feedback.

The opportunity for members of the public to provide feedback will remain open until April 12.

A spokesperson from McDonald’s said: “After careful consideration following the withdrawal of the previous application, we are pleased to be bringing forward revised plans for a new restaurant at Morrisons Lindsayfield, East Kilbride.

“If approved, the development will deliver significant investment of around £4million into East Kilbride. It would also create over 120 new jobs in a range of full and part-time positions.

“We look forward to meeting the local community which will help gain valuable local knowledge and feedback to help shape and inform the final proposals which we hope to submit as a planning application in the near future.”

Fraser Carlin, head of planning at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “A planning application from McDonald's Restaurants for a site at Lindsayfield Road was withdrawn in September 2022.

“Should a new Planning Application be submitted it will be subject to the statutory consultation and publicity processes and any comments received will be taken into consideration.”
