East Kilbride MP recognises sports centre's 50-year history with parliamentary motion

The team at the John Wright Sports Centre have been presented with an Early Day Motion in celebration of the leisure hub's 50 years in the town.

East Kilbride MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, met with staff and management at South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and thanked them personally for their service and the importance of their work promoting community wellbeing throughout their 50-year legacy.

The motion, lodged in the House of Commons, also pays special tribute to former Provost John Wright, known locally as 'Mr East Kilbride', for his pioneering service and vision for the town.

Dr Cameron said: “It was a real privilege to attend the John Wright Sports Centre to present staff with a special commemorative motion lodged in Westminster for their 50th anniversary of service across East Kilbride.

"It was wonderful to speak with staff and management who have always gone the extra mile to provide exemplary professionalism.

"The John Wright Sports Centre played a pivotal role in my wellbeing throughout my life and they continue, day in day out, to offer fantastic courses, sports and gym services for people of all ages - they receive our grateful thanks."

The John Wright Sports Centre officially opened on March 18, 1972, named after East Kilbridian, John Wright, who spent his life caring for and supporting the people of East Kilbride.

The motion acknowledged the accomplishments of the centre in welcoming more than 7.5 million visitors and providing a range of services to the local community from local sports teams to international events.

A South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture spokesman said: "Staff at the John Wright Sports Centre are grateful to receive this acknowledgement from Dr Lisa Cameron MP in recognition of all that has been accomplished over the past 50 years during which the John Wright Sports Centre has served the local community and clubs."
