BHUBANESWAR: In an effort to make the entire zone scrap-free and environment-friendly, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) disposed of the highest ever scrap from its jurisdiction from April 1 last year to March 31 this year.
Against the target of Rs 220 crore fixed by the Railway Board, the railway zone earned more than Rs 313.74 crore revenue from disposal. It earned 14.72 per cent more revenue from this as against earned in last fiscal. ECoR had earned a revenue of Rs 273.49 crore during the last financial year.
This time, ECoR conducted 188 e-auctions in its jurisdiction and sent materials to Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) for recycling and converting into other materials. Official sources said the ECoR generated Rs 112.27 crore from Waltair division, Rs 95.64 crore from Khurda Road division, Rs 39.47 crore from Sambalpur division, Rs 31.59 crore from general stores depot, Mancheswar and Rs 34.77 crore from other places.
Normally scrap is generated in any industrial activity involving machinery, tools and other assets. After completion of the life of these assets, these are to be replaced for better performance and safety.
For timely disposal of the scraps, ECoR has been conducting e-auction through its dedicated IREPS (Indian Railways E-Procurement System) portal since 2013.
More than 4,000 vendors have already registered in the portal. “The e-auction process is very transparent,” said an official statement of the ECoR.
Principal chief materials manager PB Ninawe congratulated the entire team involved in the scrap disposal system.
