Early voting at one Lexington site attracted a large crowd

Early voting for the 2023 General Election in Kentucky is well underway. The voting traffic was heavy Thursday in Lexington at one of the vote centers.

There was overflow parking at the Tates Creek Library branch on the first day of no-excuse early voting. The reasons varied. Mya Cleveland will be taking care of others next Tuesday.

“I came out to vote today, especially early because I work in the hospital and there’s no telling what time I’ll get off. So, I just wanted to make sure I exercise my right to vote today,” said Cleveland

Randy Maynard will be carrying out precinct duties on Election Day.

“The fact that I’m a poll worker. I’ll be working in a different precinct I won’t have a chance to vote, so I needed to come to vote early to be able to have my vote count,” said Maynard.

And James Hey of Lexington cited a personal growing concern as a key factor in voting this year.

“It’s the first time in my life that I would say democracy is the number one issue. It’s never been the number one issue cause I’ve taken it for granted. But it’s no longer….you can’t take it for granted,” said Hey.

A polling official at Tates Creek Library said they had been “slammed” since opening at 8:30. Early voting in Lexington is also taking place at Eastside and Northside libraries and the senior center.

Here's additional comments from voters Melinda and Lee Edgerton-Mark Scarr- and Andrew Hey who refers to his peers in their mid-20's.:
