KOCHI: Minicoy police registered a case against a 38-year-old woman for allegedly murdering her child shortly after birth and burying her body with the help of her elder son early on Monday. But, she also died in a hospital in Minicoy due to excessive bleeding later in the day.
Police said the wife of a seaman and the mother of a 17-year-old boy, reportedly got pregnant illegitimately. Her husband was away from home for almost two years and she kept the news of her pregnancy a secret from her relatives. Police said that she had tried to abort the baby many times.
Hospital authorities alerted the police after knowing the truth from some of the relatives who brought her to the hospital. “The baby’s body was wrapped in a plastic cover and given to the elder son, who buried it in secret. We have exhumed the body and prima facie it is suspected to be murder,” said inspector Ali Akbar from Minicoy.
Initially, we registered a case of unnatural death. Later a murder case was registered against her and the son. The boy was taken into custody and will be produced before the juvenile justice board on Tuesday. More details will be clear only after autopsy, he said.
