A major road remains closed in both directions after a HGV loaded with plant machinery hit a bridge.

Merseyside Police said it received reports at around 11.05am today, Friday, October 7 that a HGV vehicle loaded with plant machinery caught the bridge on Dunnings Bridge Road. A spokesperson for the force told the ECHO "no injuries were reported".

Dunnings Bridge Road currently remains closed in both directions while the bridge is assessed by National Highways. Bus services in the area have said "severe" delays should be expected.

Traffic monitor INRIX's most recent update shortly after 2.30pm said: "Dunnings Bridge Road in both direction closed, slow traffic due to accident between A5038 Netherton Way ( Bootle ) and Park Lane ( Aintree )."

A spokesperson for National Highways told the ECHO: "The footbridge near the junction with Park Lane was struck by a flatbed lorry carrying a crane – the crane has swung into the bridge and caused damage. For safety reasons the carriageway has been closed in both directions. We have sent a bridge inspector across to assess the damage and to see whether we can get a lane open in each direction."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We ask that drivers avoid the area and find an alternative route. We thank them for their patience."
