Duncan Scott qualifies fastest for Olympic 200m freestyle final

Stirling-based Duncan Scott will go for gold on Tuesday after qualifying fastest for the men's 200m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Glasgow-born swimmer won the second semi-final in a time of 1:44:60, almost half a second quicker than his nearest rival.

The 24-year-old, who won two silver medals in Rio five years ago, is a multiple world and European champion and claimed Commonwealth Games gold in the 100m freestyle three years ago.

Scott's Great Britain team-mate Tom Dean also reached the final after finishing fourth.

Dean and Scott will both harbour medal ambitions going in to Tuesday morning's final.

Scott told the BBC after the race: “Quite a few went slow in that first semi-final so I knew we had a good opportunity. We took that so we've got a good chance tomorrow.

Asked about the prospect of both of them finishing on the podium, Dean added: “It would be really exciting, we're in a great position going into tomorrow morning.”
