Dun Laoghaire Councillor and ex-Dublin GAA chairman John Bailey dies

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown councillor John Bailey has died following a battle with illness.

The Dalkey man was first elected in 2004 and had never lost his seat since winning 1,504 first preference votes in the last election.

Bailey had been suffering from motor neuron disease and passed away in hospital overnight.

The Fine Gael politician had an illustrious career also spending ten years as chairman of Dublin GAA's county board.

He was also heavily involved in Cuala who've won two of the last three All-Ireland Club Hurling championships.

Before getting into politics, Bailey ran a local pub Archers which he sold in 1999 and became a horse trainer.

He was also managing director of a tour and car rental company.

His daughter Maria has been a Fine Gael TD for the Dun Laoghaire constituency since 2016.

TD Kate O'Connell paid tribute to Bailey saying he "had a devotion to his family, his party, and his sport".

She said: "Sad to learn of the passing of Councillor John Bailey. John had a devotion to his family, his party and his sport. He fought a brave battle these last few months with dignity and determination. My thoughts are with his family, each one of whom he was so proud."
