Dumfries community champion to attend coronation of King Charles III

Dumfries’ Myra Smith will be among the guests in Westminster Abbey next Saturday for the coronation service of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The 52-year-old mum and Community Champion at Morrisons in the town, is one of 450 British Empire Medallists to be given the coveted invite.

She told the Standard: “I am over the moon, it is such an honour. I never expected this and I’m pinching myself.

“I’ve got my outfit ready and I’ve bought a notebook to write down all my thoughts on the day so it can be saved for posterity for my family to read.

“I have not been to Westminster Abbey before and I am really looking forward to it.

“It is going to be one of the key events this century – at least – and I am going to get a ringside seat.

“All my family and friends are thrilled for me and are joking they’ll keep an eye out for me on the telly.”

Myra was honoured for services to the community in Dumfries during the Covid-19 response with a British Empire Medal.

As well as helping foodbank groups during the pandemic, she has assisted schools, individuals, organisations and charities with fundraising and provisions – including the Standard’s Toy Appeal, Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes, Marie Curie, and the Poppy Scotland Appeal.

Myra won’t be the only one from the region in Westminster Abbey for the crowning as Dumfriesshire Lord Lieutenant Fiona Armstrong and Deputy Lord Lieutenant Hardip Singh Atwal have also received invitations.
