Dumfries and Galloway people urged to help support the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria

Doonhamers are being urged to support relief efforts for those affected by the earthquakes which hit Turkey and Syria.

More than 33,000 people have died and hundreds of thousands are homeless following last Monday’s disaster.

Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association has launched an appeal for new blankets, winter clothing and money to help those in desperate need. Chief executive Sitki Nalci said: “The disaster has affected millions of people including those who have lost loved ones.

“I haven’t seen anything like this in my life time. It’s very sad.

“The support we have received already has been tremendous. There are lots of kind-hearted people in Dumfries and Galloway.

“We need new items of things to keep people warm like winter coats and blankets for all ages.

“We are also looking for baby food, long-lasting food, cans, nappies and hygiene products. These are the most important items at the moment.

“We are collecting money through our website and aiming to send generators and tents as well.

“Hopefully we raise enough to send these items but if people have existing tents we are quite happy to accept them too.”

Goods can be dropped off at DGMA’s base on the High Street in the former Debenhams store.

Sitki, who is originally from central Turkey, added: “We would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far and brought items to us. We’d also like to thank businesses in the town such as Boots and Marks and Spencer.

“They have donation boxes in their stores and we hope others will follow.”

To donate money to the appeal please go to www.dgma.org.uk/donate/ and anyone with items can take them to the DGMA base at 175-179 High Street Dumfries.
