Dumbarton school secretary bids an emotional farewell after 30 years

The Aitkenbar Primary secretary was filled with tears last week as she bid farewell to the school she has been involved in for over 30 years.

Mary Gilfillan, 65, retired from the Dumbarton school last Tuesday and is now looking forward to spending more time with her granddaughter Olivia Jolly.

But she admits she will miss her colleagues and the whole school community.

She told the Lennox Herald : “I didn’t think when I got the job I would stay as long but when people go to Aitkenbar, they don’t leave. It’s a great school.”

Mary, who has two daughters, went to night school to learn typing when she heard the job was coming up and took on the role 26 years ago having been involved with the school as a parent helper from when her first daughter started in primary one in 1989.

She got a huge surprise when our photographer Colin Garvie showed up last week during a special assembly.

Mary, from Dumbarton, said: “It was an emotional rollercoaster. I got a beautiful book from the children which they had all written messages in.”
