Duffy looking for four new Sons ahead of season opener

Dumbarton manager Jim Duffy has revealed that he’s hoping to add at least four players to the Sons squad ahead of this Saturday’s season opener against Annan Athletic.

The club are believed to be close to a deal for former Dundee United midfielder Mati Zata, after the Zimbabwe under-23 international scored the winner against his former employers on Saturday.

Two other trialists, Joe McKee and former Dulwich Hamlet striker Muhammadu Faal were also on the scoresheet, whilst seven more - including Rico Quitongo, Ruaridh Langan, PJ Crossan and Boris Melingui all featured for the new look Sons, with Duffy in little doubt that he’ll add to his options before Saturday.

He said: “I’m going to have a chat with Craig (assistant manager McPherson), we told the players we’ll have a wee think over the next day or so, but by the time Annan comes up next week we need to have another four or five players on board.

“It’s all about positions. You can’t have five in all the one area because we can’t carry a huge squad. We need one or two players who can perhaps play in a few positions.”

Lewis Crawford last week became Duffy’s seventh addition of the summer, and he’s excited about working with the Helensburgh based player. He added: “Lewis is a very fit lad, he really gets up and down the pitch. He’ll add a bit of physicality.

“He’s got a little bit to go in terms of calmness, but overall I’ve been absolutely delighted with him. At just 19-years-old he’s a player with real potential.”
