Dublin traffic chaos as East Wall protesters block Port Tunnel

East Wall protesters caused traffic chaos in Dublin city centre this evening as they blocked vehicles from entering and exiting the Port Tunnel.

The local residents brought traffic to a standstill on the East Wall Road before moving along to block the Port Tunnel, causing huge delays during rush hour.

Diversions in place by Gardai directed northbound traffic to Sheriff Street while southbound traffic was diverted to Alfie Byrne Road.

The group were gathering to protest at the housing of asylum seekers at a former ESB site in the area. The protesters claimed they had been not consulted about the move and alleged the asylum seekers were brought in “under cover of darkness”.

The official Garda Traffic Twitter account said: "Due to an ongoing protest on the East Wall Road and Alexandria Road, Gardaí have enacted a traffic management operation in the area.

"A number of local diversions are currently in place. Expect traffic disruption in the area."

Gardai provided an update after 7pm, writing: "The traffic management operation has now concluded. There may still be some disruption to traffic in the area."
