Dublin's Niamh McEvoy ends Aussie Rules career after two phenomenal seasons at Melbourne

Dublin’s Niamh McEvoy has announced her retirement from Australian Rules football after two seasons at Melbourne.

The four-time All-Ireland Ladies Football Senior Championship winner has played for the last two seasons in the AFLW.

The 30 year-old played a total of eight games for the Melbourne club across two years.

Melbourne say that McEvoy was a “highly valued and much-loved member” of their squad.

Melbourne's Daniel McPherson said: “Niamh has been a terrific contributor to our AFLW programme over the past two seasons.

"Whilst she didn't play as many AFLW games as she would have liked this season, her contribution to the programme was significant.

"The competitiveness, professionalism, and experience Niamh brought across from her highly successful Gaelic football career back in Ireland has benefited our group enormously over the last two seasons.

"Niamh has been a highly valued and much-loved member of our team in the last couple of years. We thank her for her contribution and wish her all the best for the future,” he told their official website.

McEvoy was recruited alongside her Sky Blues team-mate Sinéad Goldrick in October 2019, playing five senior games in the red and blue in the 2020 season and three in 2021.

In total, only four Irishwomen represented Melbourne; the others being their team-mate Lauren Magee, who made her debut season in 2021, and Cavan native Laura Corrigan Duryea, who made history by lining out in the inaugural season of 2017 and 2018.

And all three Dublin ladies are expected to be in line out this year as they bid to win their fifth Brendan Martin Cup in a row.

McEvoy returned to Ireland to help Dublin win a fourth successive All-Ireland title last December before heading back to Melbourne.

The team made it to the AFLW finals series this year but were well beaten by Adelaide Crows last weekend.

It’s expected that McEvoy will now place her full focus on her inter-county commitments with Dublin.
