Dublin retail giants not opening on St Stephen's Day to give employees 'well-deserved break'

Two Dublin retail giants have announced that they won't be open on St Stephen's Day this year so their staff can have "a well deserved break".

Dealz are among those who won't be opening on the 26th of December, and they will also be shut on New Year's day.

Dealz managing director Barry Williams told his workforce the good news at the company's Christmas Conference in Manchester.

He said: "At the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020, we were the first retailer to commit to giving all our colleagues a well-earned rest at Christmas 2020 by keeping stores closed on St Stephen's Day and New Year’s Day.

"They deserve the same in 2021 and at our Christmas conference today in Manchester, we’ve shared that good news.

“Throughout the last 18 months, our colleagues have been heroes – quietly turning up to work to serve their communities right across the UK and Ireland.

“By closing on St Stephen's Day and New Year’ Day, we recognise that service and the chance to spend extra time with their families.”

Marks and Spencer also announced that they will be shut on Stephen's Day.

They told their 70,000 staff across the UK and Ireland the good news last month.

The company said on Twitter: “Our colleagues have been there for our customers during challenging circumstances this year.

"As a small thank you for their incredible hard work, we will once again be closing our operations on Boxing Day, enabling our colleagues to spend more time with loved ones.”
