A young Dublin man will serve six months in a US prison after pleading guilty to assaulting another Irish man who later died in hospital.
Stephen O'Brien, 26, with an address at 2nd Street, Queens, New York, agreed to the sentence which was part of a plea deal at Queens County Criminal Court on Thursday.
Danny McGee, 21, from Longord, was punched by O'Brien and later found unresponsive outside The Gaslight Bar in Queens on Thanksgiving last year.
He was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
A post mortem determined McGee was killed by a "blunt impact injury to the head".
His family watched on as O'Brien broke down in tears in court and apologised to them for what had happened.
The prosecution said that McGee was killed by a single punch to the side of his head after the pair had a row.
Speaking to RTE afterwards, Danny's mother Colleen said there are "no winners" and that the family miss him "every second of every day".
Stephen O'Brien's lawyer Matthew Gartenberg described it as "a tough day for everyone".
O'Brien was released on continuing bail and will return to court for sentencing in January.
