Dublin homeless services work hard to protect rough sleepers as temperatures to dive to -5C

Homeless services are working hard to make sure people sleeping rough are well wrapped up as temperatures plummet to -5C.

The Dublin Simon Community team has safeguarded the city’s most vulnerable people over 50 years.

Senior manager Claire McSweeney said: “We are prepared for the days ahead and have made several provisions to protect clients during this freezing weather.

“Some will opt to remain outdoors regardless of the conditions and so the Outreach team will be especially focused on this group delivering warm, dry clothing, energy-dense foods and medical assistance to this vulnerable population.

“There might be 10 to 20 of these entrenched people. We have vehicles that can go on the ice and snow to make sure we get to everyone.

“One of the big things we see after a cold spell is rough sleepers’ feet suffering from the cold, so we always make sure to layer them up with socks.”

If you notice a person sleeping rough in Dublin you can notify the Simon Community via info@dublinoutreach.ie.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow warning for snow and ice is in effect for Louth, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan until 6pm this evening.

This is alongside a national advisory that is also due to expire tonight.
