Dublin City Council planning: Docklands white-water rafting proposal resurfaces

Plans for a white-water rafting facility in the Docklands have resurfaced despite councillors pouring cold water on the idea earlier this year.

Dublin City Council has opened public consultation on the proposed White Water Rafting Centre which would be located in George's Dock.

The €12m project would include a range of water sports facilities, including a water polo amenity, white water slalom course and a kayak/raft conveyor.

Dublin City Council said: "The White Water Rafting Centre (WWRC) will provide facilities for a wide range of people who wish to participate in water sports and leisure activities in a city centre location.

"It will serve members of the public who wish to kayak or canoe or go river rafting and will serve white water course customers, including tourist visitors, club canoeists, elite athletes and emergency services.

"The project will also provide an ‘anchor’ facility for the ongoing enhancement of all water sports activity and leisure use along the River Liffey."

The plan was initially presented to councillors in January but was not well received, with former Lord Mayor Nial Ring describing it as a "white elephant".

But since the Local Elections in May, the council is now making a fresh attempt to push through the development.

Public consultation on the project remains open until October 3.
