Dublin and Kildare set to meet at UPMC Nowlan Park

The Kildare-Dublin All-Ireland SFC Group 3 tie is to take place at UPMC Nowlan Park on Saturday, June 3.

The game is a designated home fixture for Kildare but seeing as redevelopment work has commenced at St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge, they had to nominate an alternative venue.

Carlow’s Netwatch Cullen Park and MW Hire O’Moore Park in Portlaoise were also mooted but Kilkenny was the choice in the end, with Nowlan Park one of the more modern grounds in Leinster, with ample seating. The throw-in time has yet to be confirmed.

It will be the first time that a Kildare-Dublin Championship game will take place anywhere other than Croke Park since 1989, when Dublin scored a 1-13 to 1-9 victory in Newbridge in the Leinster quarter-final, with all 18 meetings in the interim staged at GAA headquarters.

The most recent of those was last month, when Dublin scored a nervy two-point win in the Leinster semi-final.

Dublin last played at Nowlan Park in 2016 in the Leinster quarter-final over Laois in what was their first Championship game outside of Croke Park in a decade, though the Leinster Council received considerable flak at the time for not affording Laois home advantage, owing to the fact that there was less seating at O’Moore Park.

The games in Group 3 get underway this weekend with Kildare travelling to play Sligo on Saturday, while Dublin open against Roscommon at Croke Park on Sunday week.
