Dublin Airport gets first direct flight from Ireland to new destination Israel

Dublin Airport is set to get its first direct flight route between Israel and Ireland.

Israel's leading airline El Al has confirmed that the route is set to be up and running by May 2020.

This new service will include three weekly flights from the Ben Gurion Airport which is near the coastal city of Tel Aviv.

There has been no direct routes between the two countries before this with only seasonal summer charter flights running.

El Al's Vice President of Marketing Miki Strassburger said: "Dublin is an activity base for hi-tech companies, while Dusseldorf regularly hosts a huge range of international conferences and fairs."

"The new routes will increase business ties and tourist arrivals to Israel, and strengthen political ties between Israel and the two countries."

Almost 3.5 million passengers travelled through Dublin Airport in July making it the busiest month in its 79-year history.

Passenger numbers increased by 4% compared to the same month last year as the airport welcomed an average of more than 110,000 passengers per day during the month.

The number of passengers travelling to and from continental Europe increased by 5%, as more than 1.9 million people took flights to and from European destinations in July.

UK traffic increased by 2%, with almost 939,000 passengers travelling to and from destinations in the UK.

Transatlantic traffic increased by 5%, with more than 484,000 passengers travelling between Dublin and North America last month.

Other international traffic, which includes flights to the Middle East, North Africa and the Asia Pacific region, increased by 2%, as almost 111,000 passengers travelled to and from these destinations in July.
