Dublin Airport discovery leaves officers amazed after man stopped from boarding flight

A staggering haul of nearly €295,000 in cash was discovered after a man was stopped from boarding a flight at Dublin Airport.

The incident happened in the capital's airport on Wednesday.

A man who was due to step on a plane heading for Malaga in Spain was stopped by Revenue Officers as a result of routine profiling.

Revenue said the huge sum of cash was suspected to be "the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity".

The cash was then detained by officers.

A 52-year-old man, who is from the United Kingdom, was questioned in relation to the find.

And yesterday Judge Brian Smyth granted Revenue a three month cash detention order at Dublin District Court.

Revenue asked anyone with information on smuggling or shadow economy activity to get in touch with them.

A spokesman said: "Earlier on Thursday, at Dublin District Court, Revenue officers were granted a three month cash detention order by Judge Brian Smyth. This followed the seizure on Wednesday, of almost €295,000 at Dublin Airport, when as a result of routine profiling, Revenue officers stopped a man prior to boarding a flight to Malaga, Spain.

"The cash is suspected to be the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity and is detained by Revenue in accordance with proceeds of crime legislation.

"A 52 year old man from the United Kingdom was questioned in relation to the seizure and investigations are ongoing.

"This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity.

"If businesses, or members of the public have any information , they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1800 295 295."
