Dublin Airport boss says hike in charges can slash security wait times

Dublin Airport chief Kenny Jacobs said the security wait times at the airport can be slashed to 15 minutes on one condition.

Mr Jacobs said airport charges will have to be increased in order to cut down on the time it takes to go through security clearance. Currently, the maximum charge at Dublin Airport is €8.50.

Mr Jacobs, who took on the role of chief executive of the daa in January this year, said: "To do that we need additional staff, and to have additional staff we need a higher charge."

He explained how the average charge for a European capital city airport is over €18. He told the Irish Independent: "The max Dublin charge is €8.50. That really doesn’t allow us to give the type of service that we want to have."

His words come nearly a year after lengthy security queues at the airport resulted in thousands of passengers missing their flights. The airport was then hit with a penalty of €3.1million by the Commission for Aviation Regulation for failing to meet the quality of service standards

The daa previously announced a number of improvements that were being rolled out ahead of the summer rush. Additional staff have been brought in to accommodate higher passenger numbers as more people jet off on holidays this summer.

Officials have assured the public there will be "no repeat" of the chaos witnessed last year.
