A dual carriageway was closed after a flock of unruly sheep strayed onto the road in North Yorkshire.

Traffic was temporarily halted on the A64 near Tadcaster after more than 30 sheep flocked to the 70mph zone on Sunday morning.

Police thanked motorists for their patience while they tried to round up the trespassers and confirmed the sheep had escaped from another location.

North Yorkshire Police posted a photograph of the incident online, showing dozens of sheep scattered on a section of the A road.

“Without wanting to bleat on, we dealt with a large amount of baaaarmy sheep this morning being a bit woolly about what they were doing on the A64 near Tadcaster," North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group said on Facebook.

"If you were caught up in it, thank ewe for your patience."

The force control room also posted the picture on Twitter, adding: “This was the scene from the A64 earlier today when both lanes had to be shut at Tadcaster whilst we dealt with this unruly group!”
