DU student’s case: FIR registered for negligence

NEW DELHI: An FIR has been filed in the case of a DU student’s leg being crushed by a concrete barrier at a construction site near Jesus and Mary College in south Delhi on March 23. Police said a case has been registered against the excavator driver for negligent conduct and rash driving. Police officials are also questioning the site manager and other officials regarding the accident.

“We have registered a case for rash driving and causing grievous hurt. We have seized the excavator machine and the driver is being questioned,” said Manoj C, DCP (South-West), on Monday. “The police control room did not receive a call about the incident, but we were informed later that the injured girl had been admitted to a private hospital. At the hospital, we were told that she had been shifted to another hospital. So far, it appears that the excavator machine was takinga U-turn when it hit the jerseybarrier, which toppled ontothe girl’s leg.”

Reacting to the incident, a PWD official said, “What can we do if the people use the construction site area as a shortcut? This is what happened in this case. We take all necessary precautions on our project sites, but people use the road cutting across the construction area.”

The accident took place on a spot between Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College and Jesus and Mary College. People often walk across the construction site to reach the colleges and the hostels and residential areas.

“We have directed the construction company to be careful,” claimed another PWD official. Work on the construction of the underpass was to have finished by March, but the deadline has been extended to April. On completion, the underpass will decongest Dhaula Kuan and Rao Tula Ram Marg. The project haslong disrupted traffic movement on Ring Road because the entire area has remained dug up for a long time.
