Drunken man propped himself up with kitchen knife as he sat in city street

A witness "felt scared" after seeing a drunken man propping himself up in Nottingham city centre with a six-inch kitchen knife, a court heard.

Jaroslaw Giminski, who works in a creamery in Cropwell Bishop, was sat down in Barker Gate, Nottingham, at about 12.45pm on Sunday, December 20, with the blade.

Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard he was alone with a kitchen knife and using the sharp end to prop himself up.

He then fell face forwards and passed out drunk, explained Mohammed Zarandouz, prosecuting, on Monday (May 24).

A Polish male turned up and a female argued with the defendant during the ten-minute incident.

"The witness felt scared, as the male had in his possession a knife," added Mr Zarandouz.

After police arrived, Giminski, 36, of Halifax Place, Nottingham, admitted having a kitchen knife in public.

"It (the knife) was with him to cut up sticks for his dog," said Mr Zarandouz. "He says he would not have used it if involved in an altercation".

Giminski was described by his lawyer, Randheer Johal, as a man "who has not troubled the courts and police, and is a hardworking individual".

"He came here to better his life and has stable work Monday to Friday. He lives with his partner and has a child".

He had consumed a lot of alcohol from the night before.

Giminski pleaded guilty to possessing the knife and was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He must complete 100 hours of unpaid work, pay a victim surcharge of £128 and costs of £85. Magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the knife.
