In Tongues

It's probably safe to say that Oakland's Drunk Horse don't take the business of being a rock band very seriously. They once recorded a double- barrelled concept album about a tanning salon and the Bible. But listening to their latest, it's obvious they are serious musicians. In Tongues was inspired in equal measure by HP Lovecraft, Phil Lynott and the dead drummer from Toto, Jeff Porcaro (in whose studio it was recorded). The only supernatural aspect to it is how the 10 riff-driven songs herein - whose subjects range from horses' hooves to religious prophecies via self-help psychobabble - pack more musical invention into their compact running times than should be possible.
