Drugs, cash found after alleged hostage incident

Police say they seized 25 grams of ice in the raid.

A man will appear in Armidale Local Court today, charged with holding two people against their will.

Police say around 5:00am on Saturday a man driving a white station wagon rammed a silver sedan on the New England Highway north of Guyra, causing it to roll several times.

It is alleged the driver of the station wagon detained a man and a woman inside the car and took them to Armidale where he allegedly assaulted them and held them against their will.

The pair escaped and reported the incident at Armidale Police Station before being taken to Armidale Hospital for treatment.

New England police searched a home in March Street, Armidale, yesterday morning where they allegedly seized 25 grams of the drug known as ice and more than $30,000 in cash.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with offences including detaining a person, predatory driving, drug supply, and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He was refused bail, pending a court appearance today.

New England Police district crime manager Detective Inspector Roger Best said the relationship between the man and the two alleged hostages was still under investigation.

He said the seizure of the drugs and cash was significant to the Armidale community.

"It's a significant quantity of ice," he said.

"Our community is facing the challenge of dealing with people who are addicted to ice and that reflects on property crime and other issues throughout our society — 25 grams is a significant quantity.

"Police are alleging that $31,000 came through the proceeds of crime and is the result of criminal activity."
