Driving in flip flops could land you with huge fine and even a driving ban

As Britain bakes during the 35C scorcher, driving can become very uncomfortably hot.

But once you've wound the windows down or whacked the air con on, what else can you do to keep cool?

Many motorists are turning to their flip flops to keep them cool while driving - but this is a real no no.

While it may not be strictly illegal, it's certainly discouraged.

The law says you can drive in whatever footwear you choose. You can even go barefoot if you like.

But the important thing is being able to operate the controls properly and safely. If you can, you won't go to jail.

However, the Driving Standards Agency, which is the executive body that regulates driving tests in the UK, says this: "Suitable shoes are particularly important behind the wheel.

"We would not recommend driving barefoot because you don't have the same braking force with bare feet as you do with shoes on."

Bearing that in mind, the RAC have produced guidelines on what footwear to drive in.

Your shoes should:

• Have a sole no thicker than 10mm

• The sole should not be too thin or soft

• Provide enough grip to stop your foot slipping off the pedals

• Not be too heavy

• Not limit ankle movement

• Be narrow enough to avoid accidentally depressing two pedals at once

An RAC spokesman told Essex Live : "While light, flimsy and impractical footwear can be dangerous, so can sturdy, robust shoes, such as walking or snow boots.

"It's important to have a good base and grip to apply pressure to the pedals, but you need a certain degree of finesse to manipulate the controls.

"If not, you could strike the brake and accelerator together, producing a heart-in-mouth incident."

Moreover, driving barefoot or in flip flops can invalidate your insurance.

In a list of the most common misdemeanors made by motorists, the comparison website revealed wearing heels or flip flops as the easiest way to get your insurance written off.
