Drivers warned to never leave sunglasses in their cars

Motorists are being warned of the dangers of leaving sunglasses in their cars after emergency services rushed to put out a fire.

Firefighters are urging people to keep the eyewear, and other reflective items, out of direct sunlight. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service took to Twitter this weekend after being called to a fire.

The tweet said: "The sun has been strong but beware this can cause fire. Earlier we attended a fire caused by sunglasses left on the dashboard. Make sure you keep reflective objects out of direct sunlight."

A follow-up tweet said the incident took place in Nuthall on Saturday, May 27, at 5.05pm and that a fire engine from Stockhill attended.

Firefighters in Merseyside put out a similar request last year after two housefires were started by sunlight reflecting off mirrors. Thankfully no one was injured but both fires caused extensive damage to the properties involved, with one of the homes left uninhabitable.

At the time Prevention Group Manager Mark Thomas said: “These fires were started by the reflected light from the sun, which directed rays from magnifying mirrors onto combustible items. Direct sunlight on mirrors can cause serious problems."

Reflective surfaces can concentrate the sun's rays and cause nearby items to catch alight so it is important to keep them out of direct sunlight.
