- Motorists have been advised that they may need to turn on their dipped headlights during today’s solar eclipse , when more than 90 per cent of the sun will be obscured.
- RAC head of policy Simon Williams urged anyone travelling in a westerly direction around the time of the eclipse to avoid being distracted.
- He said: “Taking your eyes off the road even for a split second to try to catch a glimpse of the sun as it disappears behind the moon increases the risk of being involved in a collision, not to mention the potential for suffering long-term damage to your vision.”
- Experts have cautioned the public against using uncertified glasses or looking directly at the sun, which can cause permanent damage.
- Instead, only special solar eclipse glasses that are ISO 12312-2 certified should be used to view the eclipse.
