Drivers issued warning over filling up petrol on Christmas and New Year

Drivers making the journey to see friends and family this Christmas have been issued a warning about petrol prices.

Motorists zipping to and from the festive period will be paying a hefty price for petrol.

In fact, filling up with petrol costs £16 more than last Christmas.

It comes months after a petrol crisis nationwide, which saw huge queues develop amid a massive demand for fuel.

Howard Cox, of FairFuelUK, told the Sun newspaper "scandalous prices generated by greedy wholesalers and fuel brokers" are to blame.

Unleaded and diesel were affected in September, as queues stretched from pumps nationwide, with people clamouring to fill up amid a nationwide crisis.

The great Christmas getaway will take place today and tomorrow as Brits flock elsewhere in the country for Christmas Day itself.

Travel groups and traffic experts have warned of delays on busy stretches of motorway up and down the nation.

MP Craig Mackinlay, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Fuel, said: "Efforts to work with the fuel industry so that pump prices are market driven, are not working.

"Nearly £2billion of falls in wholesale prices have not been passed on.

"This is bad for the economy, bad for inflation, bad for business and bad for jobs."
