Driver who paid for parking in 'wrong zone' was hit with a £50 fine

A driver from Sherwood has criticised Nottingham City Council for handing him a £50 parking fine for an "honest mistake".

Earl Mendies, 38, from Sherwood, had parked his car in North Sherwood Street on Sunday, December 13 at 10.17am.

Mr Mendies paid for two hours parking using the RingGo app and went off to do some Christmas shopping.

He says he "couldn't believe it" when he returned to his car within the two hours to discover a ticket on his windshield ordering him to pay the fine.

But Nottingham City Council, which later rescinded the fine, stated Mr Mendies had registered his car in parking location 18912 (zone two) but he was parked in location 18915 (zone one).

Mr Mendies told Nottinghamshire Live: "I provided them with evidence that I had paid - it was an honest mistake.

"It's not like I didn't pay it. I feel like these fines should be given to people who don't pay on purpose, but I downloaded the app and made sure I paid.

"I think it's unfair."

He added he used the location tracker on the app and followed the instructions before paying.

"I didn't know what zone I was in," he continued.

"But I just used the app and did what it said. It's confusing.

"I just think it's very harsh. I can't understand why they are willing to go this far with it."

An initial appeal lodged by Mr Mendies was unsuccessful as the council provided evidence Mr Mendies had parked in the wrong zone. He was told he had 14 days to pay £25 or it doubled to £50.

Nottingham City Council have since confirmed the fine has been cancelled.

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “The penalty charge notice was issued because the motorist parked in the wrong zone.

"However, the motorist has provided mitigating evidence through his appeal and now that we have had the opportunity to review this information, the fine will be cancelled.”
