Driver who blacked out at the wheel hurtles off motorway and down steep bank

A driver came off the motorway in a dramatic fashion after they suffered a medical episode at the wheel.

The emergency services were called out to a section of the M61 earlier today after the car came off the road and travelled down an embankment.

An image of the scene shows just how far the vehicle travelled as it left the road, tumbled down a steep grassy bank and eventually came to rest among a clump of trees.

Despite blacking out at the wheel, thankfully, the driver escaped serious injury.

North West Motorway Police have said that the driver was checked by paramedics at the scene but was not hurt.

The incident happened near the junction for Haigh Hall park in Wigan.

Their message posted on social media read: "The driver of this veh left the carriageway on the M61 having suffered a medical episode.

"Ambulance and police quickly attended the scene and gave support to the driver. Checked over by paramedics. Driver had blacked out. Thankfully no injuries to the driver or anyone else."
