Driver seriously injured after head-on crash at Rathmines

NSW Ambulance.

A man believed to be aged in his 60s has suffered serious injuries, and three others are in hospital after a crash involving two vehicles at Rathmines on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter said the man had to be placed into a medically induced coma and remains in a critical condition.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene around 4.35pm where they found two vehicles had collided head-on and the elder driver had become trapped in his car.

Emergency services worked for some time to free the man before he was rushed to John Hunter Hospital for treatment for serious head injuries and suspected broken legs, a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said.

A second man aged in his 40s and two children have also been taken to hospital suffering minor injuries, the spokesperson said.

Wangi Road re-opened around 6.30pm, however traffic remains heavy around the scene. Drivers have been told to expect delays and to exercise caution.
