Driver's fury at wheelie bin 'selfishly' chained to ground to 'reserve parking space'

An outraged resident has blasted the "selfish" behavior of one motorist who has taken parking wars to a whole new level.

Chad Miah was trying to find a parking space near his friend's house when he came across a wheelie bin blocking an empty parking space, when he went to move it Chad was astonished to find the bin was chained to the ground.

Chad's friend was getting married and the only parking spot nearby had a wheelie bin anchored into the tarmac blocking anyone form using it, Birmingham Live reports.

Chad tried to wrench the obstacle free of its moorings near his friend's property in Handsworth, Birmingham, but found it was secured with a chain and a padlock to an anchor deep in the road.

Furious Chad told reporters: "My mate lives opposite and he was getting married on that day.

"I went to move the bin, but realised the person who did this had drilled it to the ground with a bolt and hook. The bin was attached to a metal chain and had a padlock on it.

"They must have gone through some effort to do it, just to save a parking space. I was yanking it, but it wasn't moving. I've seen it all now."

Chad added he was flabbergasted by the "lengths people go to" in order to reserve a space. He said: "It's pure selfishness.

"Parking is a big issue in Handsworth and this particular street is a nightmare to drive down. We all would like to come home with parking outside our homes, but it's not the case."

A spokeswoman from Birmingham City Council said: "We would ask people to park considerately and respect all road users, and using a wheelie bin to reserve a space on the highway could be deemed an obstruction of the highway."

Local residents have reacted to the incident after footage of the chained bin was shared online. Evan Gayle said: "I'd cut that straight away."

Agreeing, Jacqueline Jones said: "This is causing an obstruction on the highway. Too many road accidents are caused by leaving such items in the road."

However some online backed the bin's placement, calling it "genius" and worthy of an award. Samina Nawaz said: "I give this person 10/10 for coming up with this." Dee Rowe added: "I don’t blame them, that road is crazy for driving through, never mind parking there."

Residents have gone to extraordinary lengths over the years to reserve much-coveted parking spaces in front of their homes. Some have placed cones, sofas as well as council bins to make sure they have somewhere to park.
