Driver of broken down car found dead underneath bridge on Scots motorway

A police probe has been launched after a driver was found dead underneath a bridge on the M80 motorway.

The 47-year-old man was discovered after police were called to the scene in Longcroft, Bonnybridge, around 12.10am on Thursday September 15.

Sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the man was driving his silver Ford Fiesta northbound at the Haggs junction in Stirling before it broke down. He stopped on the hard shoulder near to Station Road around 10.45pm on Wednesday night.

Officers from Police Scotland investigating his death are currently treating it as unexplained.

They are appealing to anybody who may have seen the man at the side of the motorway to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Andy Gardner said: “We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death and it is currently being treated as unexplained.

“We would appeal to anyone who was driving on the motorway between 10.45pm on Wednesday night and 12.10am on Thursday morning, when police were called. If anyone saw the silver-coloured Ford Focus at the side of the motorway, please get in touch. I would also appeal to any drivers on that road between those times who have dash-cam footage to contact officers.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers through 101 quoting reference 0021 of 15 September.
