Driver hurt after smashing into traffic lights in high speed police chase

A driver was taken to hospital after smashing a car into traffic lights during a police pursuit.

A damaged Kia Sportage was spotted being driven about 11.10pm on Saturday in Kensington.

Police said an attempt to stop the vehicle was made but the driver made off at speed before crashing into traffic lights on Prescot Road, Old Swan.

The wrecked vehicle is then said to have come to a stop on its side.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and a 31-year-old man was taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.

Enquiries are ongoing and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm a driver was taken to hospital for assessment following a collision in Old Swan on Saturday night (13 February 2021).

"At about 11.10pm, a white Kia Sportage with damage to its front came to the attention of patrols on Farnworth Street.


"The driver did not stop the vehicle when requested and made off at speed.

"Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver made off at speed before colliding with traffic lights on Prescot Road, Old Swan. The vehicle subsequently came to a stop on its side.

"Emergency services attended and the driver, a 31-year-old man, was taken to hospital for assessment of cuts and bruises.
