Driver gives gardai lame excuse after being stopped almost double speed limit in Kildare

A motorist has been arrested after he was caught driving nearly double the speed limit on an Irish road.

And gardai were surprised when he offered a flimsy excuse for his reckless driving.

The driver was caught out after hitting a speed of 164km/h in a 100km/h zone by the Roads Policing Unit based in Naas who were carrying out a checkpoint in Kildare.

And after he was stopped and arrested by gardai he offered up lame excuse as to why he was driving so fast- he was on his way to the bookies.

He was later charged for Dangerous Driving and is set to appear in court for his offence.

The dangerous driver could be disqualified from driving for a period of two years and could be fined up to €5,000.

Gardai said:" Roads Policing Unit based in Naas were recently on Operation Lifesaver Checkpoints where they detected this motorist travelling at 164kmh in a 100kmh zone- Motorist was on his way to Bookies.

"This Speeding Motorist Race was Abandoned as he was Arrested and Charged for Dangerous Driving - Motorist to appear in Court and could be Disqualified from Driving for a period of 2 years and fined up to €5,000 #slowdown #heedyourspeed
