More than four months after a crash that killed four-year-old Osal Mayur Pokhrel in south Canberra, police confirmed the driver involved has been charged and will face court this week.
ACT Policing charged the 80-year-old woman with negligent driving causing death and culpable driving causing death following the fatal crash at Mawson's Southlands Shopping Centre on January 18.
She is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 4.
The boy and his parents Prakash and Chura were part of a close-knit Bhutanese community in Canberra and Queanbeyan.
Father Prakash Pokhrel told The Canberra Times the family hoped the legal process would bring meaningful change and protect others in the future.
"Nothing can bring him back," Mr Pokrel said.
"We don't have anything to say about the charges ... we will just go with what the government is doing, and how the [court] will look into this matter.
"We are [more] concerned about the future, protections in the future."
On the morning of the crash, the couple had taken their son to offer prayers at a temple before heading to the Mawson shops for groceries.
It's alleged a subsequent crash involving a blue hatchback at the shopping centre caused the boy's death.
