Drink driver knocks over cyclist and drives over her as she's trapped under car

The moment a drink driver knocked over a cyclist then proceeded to drive over her has been shockingly revealed. Steven Selwood, 43, left the victim with wounds for life after the brutal assault.

The man drove his 4x4 car in to her and carried on driving while she was trapped underneath the vehicle. The brave woman, in her 70s, has allowed for the footage to be released as a warning over the potential consequences of drink driving, reports BirminghamLive.

The victim, said to be suffering from the physical and mental injuries of the attack as Selwood was jailed for two years in court and handed a driving ban after being guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst over the limit.

The woman - who was cycling in Halsemere, Surrey on May 12, 2022 when the incident occurred - says her whole life has been dramatically altered by what she experienced.

She said: “Not a night goes by without nightmares. My life has changed considerably. I used to be outgoing, talking a lot to others, going to church, back-packing. I did my own DIY and gardening.

“I was never frightened of traffic like I am today, absolutely terrified with a strong feeling it's going to happen again. My worst fear now is that my left leg will not hold me up through weakness which is happening more so these days plus my mental state is not too good. I don’t laugh anymore. I get overwhelmed with the everyday occurrences, not being able to deal with multiple issues.”

In the harrowing footage, the car knocks the woman off her bike after coming from a side road, then proceeds to drive over her and her bike as she lays trapped underneath the vehicle. Moments later, concerned citizens can be seen rushing to her aid and attempting to catch up with Selwood.

The guilty man walked back to the scene and was identified by witnesses before being arrested by police. Selwood was disqualified from driving for three years on top of the two year and three month sentence at a Guildford Crown Court on April 28.

Sergeant Joe McGregor, investigating officer for Surrey Police, said: “This footage is shocking to watch but it may serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who choose to drink and drive. The victim would like to express her gratitude to the members of the public who stopped Selwood’s vehicle.

"The victim in this case has been left with lifelong physical and mental scars and has bravely said she wants her case to be a warning to anyone who thinks that it is acceptable to drive whilst under the influence. It isn’t. You are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.”
