Drink-drive arrest after car flips and blocks busy Manchester road in serious crash

A man has been arrested after his car flipped over on a busy Manchester road. Emergency services raced out to Moston Lane, near to Moston Cemetery, at around 4.30pm today.

Just one vehicle was involved in the crash, which saw drivers having to avoid the area during rush hour while police dealt with the incident. Greater Manchester Police said that the vehicle involved in the smash had overturned.

The driver, a man aged in his 50s, was given a breathalyser test and has since been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "We were called at around 4.25pm today (Thursday, July 7) to a report of an overturned vehicle on Moston Lane, Manchester. The driver of the vehicle – a man in his 50s – has been arrested after being breathalysed over the limit.

"He has been taken to hospital as a precaution for his injuries. It appears only one vehicle was involved in this incident."

Firefighters and paramedics were also in attendance, while bus services were forced to divert from the area in rush hour. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service added: "Just before 4.30pm this afternoon (July 7), firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving one vehicle on Moston Lane in Manchester.

"Two fire engines from Blackley and Manchester Central stations quickly attended. Crews made the scene safe and worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service.

"Firefighters were in attendance for approximately 15 minutes." The road remained closed into the early evening on Thursday.

Traffic has been diverted along Kenyon Lane and Lightbowne Road to avoid the area. Several north Manchester bus services run by Stagecoach and Go North West were affected by the closure.
