Drew Lock practicing Broncos’ play calls to a mirror

Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock played in a spread offense at Missouri and many of his teammates looked to the sideline to see the play call. He didn’t often have to say a play in the huddle and when he did, the call wasn’t overly complicated.

Things are a bit different in Rich Scangarello’s offense.

“The language [is] a little different,” Lock said on May 10. “I think it’s different when you have to spit the play out. It’s tougher spitting the play out than it is actually going out there and knowing what the play is.

“That is going to be a little adjustment for me, but nothing that a little saying the word and the plays in the mirror isn’t going to fix tonight. I’ll have to dive into that a little bit.”

Lock said after his first practice last week that he would spend three-and-a-half hours practicing play calls in the mirror that night. That’s the kind of dedication that will help Lock have success as a pro.

Though Lock indicated he needed to work on reciting plays, fellow rookie Dalton Risner indicated the QB didn’t fumble over his words.

“He did great. You would never have thought it was Day 1 for him,” Risner said. “Of course he has things to work on like everyone does out there but that’s something that Drew brings to the table — he’s not a quarterback that’s going to be hesitant or have trouble doing something like that in the huddle. He did a good job.”

So far so good for the Broncos’ rookie quarterback.
