Dress that breathes, gown that changes colour: NY designer makes engineering-driven dresses

A New York based designer is hitting headlines for marrying engineering with fashion in a unique way. Cameron Hughes, who runs a luxury fashion and furniture studio in the city called the Cameron Hughes Studio has stirred up the internet with his unique offerings.

Hughes hit headlines after he gained popularity on TikTok during the pandemic in 2020. Some of his gorgeous creations include - a purple feathered dress that breathes - inhales and exhales to be precise, a motorised gown which features a skirt that changes colour as it rotates.

The designer made news with a dress that prints receipts which read ‘VOTE’ which he designed during the American presidential elections in 2020.

“I started to make my designs for looks when I was going out to clubs for fun,” says Hughes. “Then, the pandemic hit and there was nowhere for people to see what I was making, or any specific events to make looks for—so I decided to show people what I was making on TikTok,” he told Vogue in an interview.

“I took some engineering classes while [at Syracuse], but learned almost everything from YouTube and maker blogs,” Hughes says. “I actually did some kinetic and interactive sculpture [in school]—I’m just sculpting with fabric now,” he added.

The designer wishes to dress Lady Gaga someday, and we are Gaga would be more than happy to wear his designs!
