Dramatic rescue mission after tiny dog falls through ice on Scots river as anxious crowd watch on

A dog who fell through a frozen Scots river was saved in a dramatic rescue mission.

The small dog fell through cracked ice at Water of Leith in Edinburgh on Friday in front of horrified on lookers.

Specialists raced to the scene at Shore Place around 1:30pm as well as two fire engines to help the struggling animal.

Anxious crowds watched firefighters and several water rescue team members dive into the water in a desperate bid to save the pet, reports Edinburgh Live.

It was then wrapped in a blanket and reunited with its emotional owners in a heartwarming moment.

Onlookers were heard cheering as rescuers handed the dog over this afternoon.

A video shared on Edinburgh Spotlight caught the dramatic action which lasted just under ten minutes.

The footage showed an anxious crowd gather as they watched efforts to rescue the dog.

The post said: "Dog rescued from the Water of Leith after jumping in."

One person said: "Thanks for posting - I didn’t know what was happening and didn’t want to stop as there were so many people looking - so glad it was a safe rescue, one lucky pup well done."

A second person said: "Brave folks getting in the water, hats off to them and nice to see a happy ending."

A third person said: "So glad the wee doggy is fine."
