Dr Who and Taggart actor dies from coronavirus days after taking ill

An actor and Radio Clyde producer has lost his battle with coronavirus.

Hamish Wilson passed away in hospital within days of being struck down with the illness.

The 77-year-old's death has devastated family and friends, with many paying tribute to the 'lovely legend'.

Mr Wilson raised his family in Rutherglen, and worked for many years in radio, including stints at Radio Clyde and then the BBC, where he worked for over a decade.

He appeared in two episodes of Doctor Who in the 1960s, filling in as the Doctor's ally Jamie, after regular star Frazer Hines fell ill with chickenpox, the Rutherglen Reformer reports.

He also appeared in Taggart and Monarch of the Glen and worked with actors' union Equity.

Lorne Boswell of Equity said: "He led a full life and touched many people.

"He was one of life's enthusiasts and succeeded at most everything he turned his hand to. Time in his company was always enjoyable and often informative.

"Remember that mischievous grin and raise a glass to him. RIP."

Former Doctor Who executive producer Russell T Davies added: "What a lovely legend he was."

Mr Wilson took ill on Saturday, March 21 and passed away the following Thursday.

Kenny Smith, former editor of the Rutherglen Reformer, had fond memories of his friend.

He said: "We had a shared love of film, TV, radio and books and we stayed in touch, regularly having lunch at Dr Gorman's.

"I also had the privilege of interviewing Hamish at a Doctor Who convention in Glasgow, where he was slightly bemused that people wanted to hear about a job he'd done for only two weeks more than three decades previously. But, secretly, I think he rather liked the adulation!

"Hamish always spoke with pride about his daughters and their achievements, and his love of his wife Di was clear to see when he talked about her - his eyes lit up.

" I will miss that wonderful, rich voice of his, his wonderful stories, and most of all, his friendship."
