Dr Tony Holohan issues urgent Covid message to all employers

The Chief Medical Officer has asked all employers to make sure staff are working from home whenever possible.

Dr Tony Holohan said that he "would encourage" all managers to ensure they have "effective measures" in place for when home working isn't an option.

He was speaking as the National Public Health Emergency Team confirmed another 1,247 cases of Covid-19, along with 15 more deaths.

Dr Holohan said: "There is an onus on employers to ensure that, in the first instance, staff are encouraged to work from home and in cases where that is not possible, that their workplaces are safe for staff and customers and in full compliance with infection prevention and control measures.

“The HPSC has comprehensive guidance on outbreak management and infection prevention control measures that every employer should be familiar with and activating on their premises.

"I encourage all employers and managers to review their workplaces and ensure they have effective measures in place.”

The latest batch of figures brings the death toll in Ireland to 3,307, while the total number of cases confirmed here has jumped to 196,547.

Of those diagnosed, 659 were women and 579 were men, while the average age was 39.

Dublin again had the most number of new infections with 430, followed by Wexford (97), Cork (87), Limerick (84) and Galway (76).

There are currently 1,516 Covid patients being treated at hospitals nationwide, 211 of which are in intensive care.
